Oceans and climate, stability under threat

Staring at the ocean on a gorgeous day, it may be difficult to actually imagine the crucial role it plays in our Earth's climate. Each year, World Ocean Day (June 8) reminds us that scientists are still far from fully grasping the complex relationship between these great bodies of water and climate as well as the critical dangers they face. For the system seems to be spiraling out of control: Ice caps are melting, major ocean currents are under threat of disappearing, sea levels are rising, the water itself is becoming more acidic. With such upheavals looming, scientists are hard at work, in their laboratories and out at sea.
