Biodiversity 5 Major Challenges

Spring 2006 has been a busy time for biodiversity specialists: COP 8 of the Convention for Biological Diversity in Brazil in March, International Biodiversity Day on May 22nd, French Sustainable Development Week starting May 29th, EU Green Week in Brussels in early June, and, rounding it all off, World Environment Day on June 5th. These were all good opportunities for researchers from CNRS laboratories to sound the alarm on the dynamics of the life system on Earth. The challenges they face are immense. They must attempt to draw up an inventory of biodiversity, understand the interactions between different species, make a thorough diagnosis of the dangers that threaten biodiversity, and find solutions to protect it and restore what human activity has destroyed. In short, five major challenges for the future of our planet.
