CNRS to play major part in ESOF 2018

Institutional matters

Toulouse is to host the EuroScience Open Forum (ESOF), Europe's largest interdisciplinary gathering on science and innovation, from 9 to 14 July 2018. In parallel with this event for researchers, the city is organising the 'Science in the City' festival from 7 to 15 July, with over 120 events aimed at sharing science with the public. For around ten days, the pulse of Toulouse, European City of Science 2018, will beat to the rhythm of science. CNRS and its laboratories will be playing a major role in both the forum and the festival, two unprecedented events for Toulouse and France.

EuroScience Open Forum (ESOF)
Founded in 2004 by the EuroScience association, this European event, held every two years, brings together around 4,000 researchers and socio-cultural, economic and political players from all over the world. CNRS will be particularly involved in the Science to business programme dedicated to innovation, which will showcase a selection of start-ups emanating from labs in Toulouse (SmartCatch, IMD Pharma, etc), laboratories jointly run with companies or implementing innovative technologies, together with CNRS facilities for technology transfer and innovation. CNRS will also be present on the stand of the French Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation.

Science in the City Festival
In parallel with the Forum, the Science in the City Festival, coordinated by Toulouse Métropole, will be held all around the city and its surroundings from 7 to 15 July, with over a hundred free, fun and interactive events aimed at sharing science with as wide a public as possible. For around ten days, the pulse of the city will beat to the rhythm of science, with shows, exhibitions, activities, and encounters with scientists. Several CNRS laboratories will be taking part in this wide-ranging programme.

La science taille XXL

La Science Taille XX Elles
This project aims to turn the spotlight on women in science, reveal the diversity of research careers, and raise public awareness of the role of female scientists, who are often outnumbered and overshadowed by their male colleagues. Women who work in science will be available to meet the public, discuss gender stereotypes and bias, as well as job options for young female students, and provide encouragement for budding scientists. Presided over by the portraits of twelve female scientists from Toulouse taken by photographer Vincent Moncorgé, activities, events, speed networking and talks will be held in the Espace des Diversités et de la Laïcité from 7-9 July. Discussion shows and a guided tour through the streets of Toulouse will also be on offer. 'La Science Taille XX Elles' is organised by the 'Femmes & Sciences' association and by CNRS.

Retina Pictonique

This exhibition will bring together work by artists Sultra&Barthelemy and will be held in the spectacular spherical building that formerly housed the electron microscope at CNRS's Centre d'Elaboration de Matériaux et d'Etudes Structurales (CEMES). With the participation of researchers from CNRS's Laboratoire d'Analyse et d'Architecture des Systèmes (LAAS) and the Institut de Recherche en Informatique de Toulouse (IRIT, CNRS/Université Toulouse 1 Capitole/Université Toulouse – Jean Jaurès/Université Toulouse III - Paul Sabatier/INP Toulouse), the public will be able to discover the internal processes involved in image production. Visitors will also be able to attend a talk and take part in two hands-on activities.

Chimie & Couleurs dans la Cité

This project, proposed by the Institut de Chimie de Toulouse (ICT), is centred around walks through various neighbourhoods of Toulouse, bringing together chemistry, dance and theatre with the participation of the association 'Les Chemins Buissonniers'. The programme also includes a guided tour, activities focusing on pastels (in collaboration with the Musée du Pastel de Labège), and encounters with scientists.

Surfing on this wave of scientific talent, CNRS laboratories will be organizing a host of scientific events in Toulouse throughout 2018. In addition, a number of fringe events will also be proposed during the week of the EuroScience Open Forum, such as the major conference of the Société Française d'Optique (SFO), hosted by CNRS's Laboratoire d'Analyse et d'Architecture des Systèmes (LAAS), which will bring together 650 researchers from July 3-6.

And finally, CNRS is also a partner in the 5th European Conference of Science Journalists (ECSJ) to be held on July 8. Participants in the conference will be able to visit six laboratories specialized in a wide range of scientific fields (materials physics, engineering and robotics, ecology, space, social sciences, etc).
