European Social Survey : a Large-Scale European Survey

A recent European research programme, “European Social Survey”, (ESS) has been set up to develop a comparative European analysis of socio-political attitudes and behavior covering all the member nations of the EU (and a few outside of the EU). Bruno Cautrès (CIDSP) and Etienne Schweisguth (CEVIPOF)1 are the survey coordinators in France with the participation of a number of social scientists. Funded by the EU, the Ministry of Research, and the CNRS, this large-scale social survey will make available to European researchers an important data base for developing comparative analyses in sociology and political science. In 2003 the survey took up the following themes: politics, social ties, media, institutional confidence, citizen participation, immigration. The first results have just been published.
