CNRS/sagascience issues a report on nuclear energy

Coinciding with France's ongoing debate on energy transition, the CNRS / sagascience collection releases a report on the current state of nuclear energy. This animation gives the public invaluable cues to deciphering nuclear issues and thus take part in the national debate organized between January and April 2013.

This multimedia report is structured around four main themes:

- Henri Becquerel's discovery, in 1896, of natural radioactivity, which led to the production of nuclear energy in the 1940s;

- a description of the various factors involved in nuclear energy production: extraction of uranium ore; functioning of reactors; nuclear fuel cycle; waste management; dismantling of nuclear power plants; radiological protection; environmental monitoring; costs of the different electricity production methods;

- the social aspects of nuclear energy in the wake of Fukushima: human and environmental consequences of accidents, public perception, economic perspectives of nuclear power; power plant safety;

- future energy production, fuel reprocessing and waste storage technologies.

Researchers at the CNRS National Institute of Nuclear and Particle Physics (IN2P3), experts in environmental radioactivity measurement (through the "Becquerel network") and in the design of innovative solutions aimed at reducing the amount and toxicity of radioactive waste contributed to this report.
