France-Argentina : a new international associated laboratory in fluid mechanics

The International Associated Laboratory entitled “Physique et Mécanique des Fluides” (LIA PMF, or “Fluid Physics and Mechanics”) was inaugurated on March 10th, 2010 at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Buenos Aires in Argentina. It substantiates the scientific cooperation that has existed for 25 years between Argentine and French laboratories in the field of complex flows. The objective: to give a new dimension to this collaboration by creating a top-level international skills cluster for fluid mechanics.

The “Physique et Mécanique des Fluides” LIA extends and strengthens the cooperative initiatives between three Argentine laboratories from the University of Buenos Aires' Faculty of Engineering (FIUBA): DH-FIUBA (Departamento de Hidráulica), GMP-FIUBA (Grupo de Medios Porosos), LFD-FIUBA (Laboratorio de FluidoDinámica, Departamento de Ingenieria Mecánica) and four French laboratories: FAST (Fluides, Automatique et Systèmes Thermiques, CNRS/Université Pierre et Marie Curie/Université Paris-Sud), Institut P' (Département Fluide, Thermique et Combustion, CNRS/Université de Poitiers/ENSMA), LIMSI (Laboratoire d'Informatique pour la Mécanique et les Sciences de l'Ingénieur, CNRS/Université Pierre et Marie Curie/Université Paris-Sud), PMMH (Physique et Mécanique des Milieux Hétérogènes, CNRS/ESPCI-ParisTech/Université Pierre et Marie Curie).

These scientific partnerships have already led to many exchanges for young researchers, often involving Ph.D. co-supervision and/or cooperation. They have also made possible the development of a complementary scientific skills base, characterized by close and enduring relations in the field of study of complex and dispersed flows (particle flows or flows in rocks and soils), and on the analysis, modeling and control of non-stationary flows (application to the control of unstable flows).

The international associated laboratory, created for a period of four years, will pool human and material resources around two research areas related to flow mechanics and physics: “complex and dispersed flows” and “the analysis, modeling and control of non-stationary flows”. This research has industrial applications in the environmental field, in particular on the dispersion of pollutants and in the petroleum industry (for complex and dispersed flows) and, with regard to flow control, in the automotive, aeronautics and aerospace sectors.
